Word Documents

Microsoft Word is by far the world's most widely used text processing application. Thus, there is no need to go into peculiarities of the Word format in general. Actually, there are only a few Word-specific issues that must be taken into consideration when translating Word documents with Across.

SmartArt

Across supports the translation of SmartArt images contained in Word (DOCX) files. For this purpose, the text contents of the SmartArt images are extracted during check-in and can subsequently be translated in crossDesk.

Formatting

Unlike Word, formatting styles in crossDesk are assigned by means of a drop-down list in the Target Editor. Make sure that all styles that are used in the source text are also used in the translation.

Fields

Information inserted in the form of fields in Word documents is displayed in the form of non-editable, gray fields – so-called placeables – in crossDesk. For example, this is the case with cross-references and TOC fields. The information may also be displayed in the form of editable green fields. This is the case with index entries and hyperlinks.

Attention

Please note that Across only provides limited support for character styles in Word documents in doc format. The docx format in Word documents does support character styles.

Word templates

If certain parts of a Word document or the images contained in it should be hidden from the translator in crossDesk or indicated as locked, you can create templates defining how they appear in crossDesk. You can create document templates for Word under Tools > System Settings > Document Settings > Word 2000-2003 or Word 2007-2016.
