Special Characters and Symbols

Special characters and symbols can be inserted in the Target Editor in various ways.

Inserting via Menu Item

  1. Proceed as follows:
  2. Select the menu item Tools > Insert Symbol.
  3. Select the font and the respective subset via the drop-down list.
  4. Click the respective special character or symbol.
  5. Click Insert.
  6. The respective character will be inserted at cursor position in the Target Editor.

Insert via Unicode value

In order to insert symbols or special characters via Unicode value in the Target Editor, you need to know the corresponding Unicode value of a character. This can be found in the Across symbol table, which you can open via Tools > Insert Symbol, or in the Windows character map under Start > Program Files > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map.

  1. Proceed as follows:
  2. Enter the Unicode value of the respective character in the Target Editor (e.g. 00BB for »).
  3. Then press the keyboard shortcut Alt+X.
  4. Across will convert the Unicode value into the corresponding character.

Inserting via Shortcut

In order to insert symbols or special characters via keyboard shortcuts in the Target Editor, you need to know the corresponding keyboard shortcut of a character. This can be found e.g. in the Windows character map under Start > Program Files > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map.

Enter the keyboard shortcut (e.g. Alt+0187 for ») to insert the respective character in the Target Editor.

Inserting via Auto-Replace Function

Across has an auto-replace function for automatically converting common typing errors, but also especially for converting special characters and symbols.

  1. Proceed as follows:
  2. Open the section that manages the auto-replace function via Tools > User Settings > crossDesk > Target Editor.
  3. Click Add to create a new auto-replace entry.
  4. Enter the string of characters that should be replaced and the desired character in the input field. You can insert special characters and symbols, e.g. via the clipboard, or via the button Insert Symbol.
  5. Click OK to create the auto-replace entry.
  6. From now on, if you enter this string into the Target Editor, Across will automatically convert it into the respective character.
