Context matches

In addition to the normal matching of a sentence with crossTank with respect to the content and style, the context match also takes the preceding sentence and the subsequent sentence into consideration. For this purpose, Across stores the context for each translation unit on the basis of the IDs of the preceding and subsequent sentences or segments.

Thus, a context match is a match for which not only the properties of a normal 100% match – i.e., 100% correspondence between the content and style of the current sentence or segment and a crossTank hit – but also the context from the preceding and subsequent sentence or segment corresponds.

Especially for texts with many short sentences, some of which may merely consist of individual words – as if often the case in tasks such as software localization – the inclusion of the context for pre-translations provides more security that the correct crossTank hits are inserted in the translation.

Context matches take the preceding sentence and the subsequent sentence into consideration as context. The first sentence and the last sentence of a document are exceptions: In the case of the first sentence of a document, only the subsequent sentence is compared for the identification of a context match; in the case of the last sentence, only the preceding sentence is compared.

Across always stores the context information for every new crossTank entry. However, for context information to be taken into consideration during pre-translations, context matches must be activated in the pre-translation settings under Tools > System Settings > General > Project Settings Templates > crossTank. In addition, you can configure other settings related to the pre-translation with context matches.

Context penalty

For context matches, a special context penalty is available: If a crossTank entry that is not a context match is found for the current sentence in crossTank, a certain percentage will be deducted from the match rate.

By default, the penalty is set to 0%. However, like other penalties, it can be adjusted in the penalty settings under Tools > System Settings > General > Project Settings Templates > crossTank.
