Project Settings Templates: crossTank > Penalties
In this section you can define the penalties for the matching of crossTank entries. When Across finds a matching crossTank entry for the current sentence in crossTank, the match value may be reduced on the basis of the penalties listed below.
For example, in the event of a crossTank hits whose content fully matches the current sentence but whose formatting is different, a penalty of 5% may be deducted from the actual match rate of 100%.
First, you can determine the penalty behavior in cases in which the crossTank hits are not assigned any system attribute (subject, project, relation, and user defined attributes), but one or more system attributes are assigned to the project. If you activate the option, a penalty will be applied in these cases; if you deactivate it, no penalty will be applied.
Example:
The following example assumes that the "Quickstart guide" subject is assigned to the document to be translated. For the current segment to be translated, crossTank contains two hits: one without subject and one with the "Quickstart guide" subject.
Option activated | Option deactivated |
If the option is activated, the different subject penalty will be applied to the first crossTank hit although no subject is assigned to the hit. | If the option is deactivated, no different subject penalty will be applied to the first crossTank hit, as no subject is assigned to the hit. |
In addition, you can decide whether penalties should be set and how high their percentage should be:
Penalty on | Description | Example |
Different sublanguage | The sublanguage of the current sentence is different from the sublanguage of the retrieved crossTank entry. | American English instead of British English |
Switched words | The sequence of the words in the current sentence is different from the sequence in the retrieved crossTank entry. | "the installed software" vs. "the software installed" |
Different subject | The subject of the current sentence is different from the subject of the retrieved crossTank entry. | "Medicine" vs. "Technology" |
Different project | The project of the current sentence is different from the project of the retrieved crossTank entry. | "Project A" vs. "Project B" |
Different relation | The relation of the current sentence is different from the relation of the retrieved crossTank entry. | "Company A" vs. "Company B" |
Different user-defined attribute | A user-defined system attribute of the current sentence differs from the user-defined system attribute of the crossTank entry found. | "Model A" vs. "Model B" |
Different structure attribute | The structure attribute of the current paragraph is different from the structure attribute of the retrieved crossTank entry. Attention This penalty will only be applied if structure matches are enabled under Tools > System Settings > General > Project Settings Template > crossTank > Pre-translation Settings. | The current paragraph has the structure attribute "Heading", the crossTank hit, however, has the structure attribute "List item". |
Different context | If a crossTank entry that is not a context match is found for the current sentence in crossTank, a certain percentage will be deducted from the match rate. Attention This penalty will only be applied if context matches are activated. The activation can be done in the pre-translation settings of the corresponding project settings template and in the pre-translation settings of the user settings.
Different formatting | The formatting of the current sentence is different from the formatting of the retrieved crossTank entry. | "Click OK." vs. "Click OK." |
Different inline objects | The inline objects in the current sentence are different from the inline objects of the retrieved crossTank entry. The inline objects in Across include placeables, editable fields and tags.
Different special characters | The special characters in the current sentence are different from the special characters of the retrieved crossTank entry. Tip Special characters are white spaces (e.g. normal and no-break spaces), control characters, arrow symbols, Braille characters, mathematical operators. A list of special characters is available under https://share.across.net/index.php/s/fQxSeNtMQPfp4jx | "e.g." (without a space) vs. "e. g." (with a space) vs. "e.°g." (with a non-breaking space) |
crossTank entries with the Newly inserted status | The crossTank entry retrieved for the current sentence has the status Newly inserted. The entry was added manually in crossTank.
crossTank entries with the Smartly inserted status | The crossTank entry retrieved for the current sentence has the status Smartly inserted. The entry was inserted in crossTank by means of an automatic function without user interaction.
crossTank entries with the Aligned status | The crossTank entry retrieved for the current sentence has the status Aligned. The entry was inserted in crossTank within the scope of an alignment.
crossTank entries with the Released status | The crossTank entry retrieved for the current sentence has the status Released. The entry was released by an authorized person.
Different punctuation | The punctuation in the current sentence is different from the punctuation in the retrieved crossTank entry. | "I am hungry." vs. "I am hungry!" |
Apart from the penalties listed above, there are other penalties whose percentage value cannot be customized:
Penalty on | Description | Example |
Different text | The text of the source language segment is different from the text in the source language segment of the retrieved crossTank entry. The percentage of similarity between the two segments is calculated on the basis of the following formula ("weighting of a word" meaning the number of letters in a word): (Sum of the weightings of the matching words)/(sum of the weightings of all words) x 100 | "The boring job" vs. "The boring work" Sum of the weightings of the matching words = 18 (2 x "The boring") Sum of the weightings of all words = 25 (1 x "The boring work" + 1 x "The boring job") Calculation of the similarity: (18 / 25) x 100 = 72% |
Different use of upper and lower case | The case of the current source language segment is different from the case in the source language segment of the retrieved crossTank entry. The penalty value is 1% and the penalty is applied only once even if several characters differ. | "welcome" vs. "Welcome" |
Different numbers | The current source language segment and the source language segment in the retrieved crossTank entry contain different numbers and/or a different number of numbers. Some numbers are auto-adjusted by Across. The penalty value is 1% but the penalty is cumulated if there are several different numbers. | "The current version is 5.0" vs. "The current version is 5.1" |
Violated length restriction | For the current target language segment, there is a length restriction which is violated by the target language segment of the retrieved crossTank entry. The penalty value is 1%. Tip Elements in HTML, SGML, and XML files may contain length restrictions by means of which the translation of these elements is limited to a certain number of characters. The translation must not be longer than the specified number of characters. | The current target language segment must not exceed 20 characters. However, the current target language segment of the retrieved crossTank hit contains 22 characters. |
