The subject of machine translation has revolutionized the language industry. Hardly any new technology has impacted the way how translators work to such an extent. Only the introduction of CAT tools and translation management systems was of a similar magnitude.
In our blog, we have already reported extensively on how machine translation affects companies and translators. Those who are familiar with the subject are aware of the fact that every engine produces results of a different quality for various language pairs. For example, SYSTRAN delivers excellent results for the language combination English → French, while DeepL outperforms other generic engines in the combination English → German.
For this reason, a company might want to configure several machine translation (MT) engines and select the most suitable one depending on the language pair. In the Across Language Server, this function can easily be set up and used.
Basically, the feature can be used in every multilingual project in which MT is to be unleashed. Based on a number of test projects, it is possible to see which engine delivers the best results for the respective language combination.
In the Across Language Server, the engines can be selected and configured under System Settings → Machine Translation. Here, you can add the various engines one by one.
In the second step, select the language combination that the respective machine translation engine is to be used for. Of course it is also possible to select the same engine for several language combinations.
The use of machine translation affects the costs of a translation project, as the word rate is usually lower than for "normal" projects. However, do not forget that the initial introduction of MT represents a major investment.
- You can create several configurations for each MT system in order to accommodate different application scenarios.
- Your MT configurations are displayed in a list. The pre-translation makes use of the first MT whose settings suit the project. If necessary, you can change the order with the help of the arrow buttons.
- As a matter of principle, all parties in the supply chain can use MT if this is permitted by the respective Master Server. The Trusted Server and the offline users are subject to the settings of the Master Server. For this reason, the decision as to whether machine translation is to be used must be made while preparing the project.
- The machine translation is performed within the scope of the pre-translation. Depending on the settings configured, this takes place immediately after the project creation, from within crossDesk, or only for source sentences for which no translation unit exists in crossTank.
