crossTerm Terminology System:
Corporate Wording as Part of Corporate Identity
Summary
Consistent company terminology is a component of the corporate identity. In order to fulfill this purpose properly, terminology not only needs to be defined in a structured manner, but also needs to be made available throughout the company.
Across provides the appropriate tools for this, ranging from a seamlessly integrated terminology system to purely web-based access to in-house terminology portals.
Motor or engine? Tennis shoes or sneakers? Terminology is an essential part of corporate communication and corporate identity; for that reason, appropriate functionalities are included in many application areas of the Across Language Server. In this connection, the terminology database serves as a central pool for all terminological information.
Contents can be entered in this central database in very different ways -- for example, by importing existing lists, by extracting company terminology and technical jargon from text documents, or by integrating electronic dictionaries of leading specialty publishers. Supplementing your own terminology system, Across can research terms in any terminology sources desired in the Internet or company Intranet, directly from the Editor screen, and can easily transfer search results to the translation.

The circle of users is just as varied as the terminology sources. It ranges
- from the editor, who calls attention to unacceptable words, for example, or to preferred wording, during the authoring of the text
- to the translator, who is shown the pertinent foreign translations directly in the Editor
- to quality assurance personnel, who check the use of stored terminology.
But terminology is a matter of interest not only for those directly involved in creating or translating texts, but also for administrative offices and specialty departments, for example. For that reason, the Across terminology system is not just available to Across clients, but is optionally also accessible with a browser, through a company's own Intranet portal.
