FAQs
Does Across support the entry of Chinese characters?
Yes, the input tool "Chinese (Simplified) - Microsoft Pinyin IME 3.0“ is approved for the use with Across. Entry tools that support, e.g. Microsoft Word can also be used with Across.
I'd like to make a suggestion: There is something missing in Across that could be integrated.
We are looking forward to receiving your feedback! We are interested in hearing about your ideas and including them in our plans for future product versions. Just send us an email to feedback@across.net!
What is a softkey and what is a cap file?
In Across, softkeys serve the easy connection between Across Clients and the Across Server and the authentication of users against the Server. For this reason, the softkey contains the Server IP address or the name of the Server as well as installation and user GUIDs. No passwords are saved in a softkey. You can find additional information on this topic in the chapter "Softkeys" of the user manual "Across at a Glance"".
Where can I get the latest documentation?
The latest versions of the documentation are available at www.across.net/en/documentation-center.aspx.
What are the benefits of the attributes "relation", "subject" and "project"?
The attributes can be added as additional information, e.g. to projects, crossTank entries, or terms. As Across operates on the basis of a database and stores all information in a central database, we recommend the consistent use of these attributes, e.g. in order be able to use filters to limit the displayed search results to a particular customer or subject. Moreover, penalties can be defined for the case that different attributes are used.
How can I adopt data from my existing CAT tools?
You can import your terminology and translation units (translation memory) to Across from your existing CAT system. Terminology can be imported to crossTerm. Supported formats: MultiTerm, Star Martif, Langenscheidt LexTerm, TBX, and CSV.
Translation memories can be imported to crossTank. Supported formats: TMX (Translation Memory eXchange), TTX (TRADOStag), and GLO (Passolo Glossary).
Information on importing translation memories and terminology to Across is available in chapters 5.2 and 6.1 in the step-by-step instructions.
How long can I use the trial version and what happens to my data when I make a purchase?
The Across trial version is valid until the end of the month following the month of installation. Your data will not be lost after this period - after ordering a full version, you will be able to continue using them. After the expiry date you will no longer be able to start Across except by using a regular license key.
A very large Word document is still being checked in and I would rather like to start translating!
Split the document into smaller parts and check them in one by one. This enables you to immediately process one part and then check in further parts piece by piece, e.g. during breaks, using the pre-translation from the parts already translated.
Sometimes Across seems to be quite slow, which does not happen with competing products. What is the reason for some processes to be slower?
1. Across is a complex software that unifies many functions and boasts an architecture that is very different from that of competitor products. For example, Across works with an SQL Server that administers the databases and receives commands from Across.
2. When working with Across, many operations take place in the background, which makes a comparison with other programs difficult; for example, during check-in (import of a source document to the open relational database), a report is generated and a pre-translation is carried out. If necessary, a template is applied to the document to be imported in order to save time and translation workload later on. In some situations, the size of the files, the created crossWAN load packages, or the crossTank or crossTerm packages to be imported can play a role.
3. Please check our system requirements to see whether your system complies with our recommendations; if necessary, use a more powerful server. Depending on your system load, you may want to upgrade the SQL Express Edition to SQL Server 2005 and use more RAM.
What is an update? What is the Update Wizard for?
For example, documents are updated via the Update Wizard after content changes, e.g. when a new version of a document such as an operating manual is released. Updates can also be performed after customizing or creating a new document template that you want to apply to a document.
My welcome page does not display everything.
The login screen consists of an active HTML window, i.e. a window in which scripts are run. Please check whether virus scanners or other programs are blocking the execution of these scripts. If this does not solve the problem, please check the version of your Internet Explorer. Across requires version 7.0 or 8.0.
