KARLSBAD – March 20, 2008 - "Efficient translating starts with the source text" – this is the motto under which Across System will participate in various trade shows in spring. As the central platform for all corporate language resources, the Language Server enables the establishment of the basis for quick and cost-efficient translations even while composing product information. The optional component crossAuthor connects editors like MS Word, Adobe FrameMaker, Just XMetaL, and PTC Arbortext to the Language Server, thereby facilitating translation-oriented authoring at the source-text level. An interface to CLAT expands the possibilities of the Language Server, enabling the seamless integration of rules-based quality assurance. Additionally, Across will present the new version 4.0 SP1, which contains various extensions such as FrameMaker 8 and SGML support, context matching, client capability through project management templates, and improvements for Web-based translations via crossWeb.
Across Systems GmbH will introduce the new version and the authoring solutions for the Across Language Server at the tekom spring conference from April 3 to 4 in Friedrichshafen, Germany, and at the PROKOM 2008 from April 14 to 16 in Stuttgart, Germany.
"In the past months, translation-oriented authoring with crossAuthor proved to be of the most successful options for Across Language Server. Therefore, we have decided to replace the plugins realized by partners for this purpose and offer crossAuthor for all common source-text editors from one source", explains Across CEO Niko Henschen.
crossAuthor is an option for Across Language Server that substantially supports users in the field of "translation-oriented authoring", making it possible to compose the original text in such a way that subsequent translations can be made efficiently later on. The tool is based on the concept of recycling existing language resources. While the author writes the source text, the system displays wording and text proposals that are stored in the Across translation memory and terminology system. Alternatively, crossAuthor can be used to review a text that has already been written. As foreign-language translations already exist for recycled wording, this approach not only optimizes the text quality, but also reduces the subsequent translation workload significantly.
Thanks to a direct interface, the author works in his usual editor, connected to the databases of the Across Language Server by means of add-ons. Add-ons are available for many applications, including Microsoft Word, Adobe FrameMaker, Adobe InDesign, PTC Arbortext, and JustSystems XMetaL. Apart from the accustomed editor, the author sees two additional windows that provide hits for the sentence that is currently being processed.
In the crossTank window, he sees all corresponding sentences from the translation memory. In addition to the actual hits, the author also sees all meta data, e.g. information about when, by whom, and in which context the translation memory entry was originally created. The desired hit can easily be integrated in the source text with a mouse click or shortcut key, where it can be further edited if necessary.
The crossTerm window displays all designations associated with the same term as the wording in the source text. At a glance, the author sees whether there is any synonym that is to be preferred or whether he is currently using a word not to be used.
Recently, Across and IAI (Institute for Applied Information Science at Saarland University) announced a partnership for the connection of the Language Server to the quality assurance tool CLAT (Controlled Language Authoring Tool). In this way, the Across Language Server is complemented with rules-based quality management options. This concept enables automated quality assurance, even of extensive texts, and seamless integration in authoring and translation processes, e.g. for manuals or product catalogs in several languages.
CLAT facilitates quality checking of texts, e.g. to verify the compliance with grammar rules or terminology conventions. The IAI software is a leading tool in this area and is based on the same technology as the award-winning "DUDEN Korrektor", which is sold by the Brockhaus Publishers. CLAT can also automatically check the correspondence of a text with company-specific standards such as corporate wording. Thus, there is no need for manual reconciliation with internal style guides.
